Alternative Ways To Give Up Smoking
In order to make the transition from smoker to non-smoker, it can take more than just willpower. For many smokers it isn’t just the addiction to nicotine that prevents them from giving up but the social events that accompany the habit. For workers it can be a much needed work break, to light up a cigarette and have a chat amongst co-workers or a social drink in the evening is often associated with the cigarettes. There are several medications on the market to aid giving up smoking, yet there are many alternative methods which can be very effective.
Emotional Freedom Technique
Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) and Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) can be effective in giving up smoking by focusing on underlying emotions to break the addictions. The simple ‘tapping’ technique, uses certain pressure points on the body to re-balance your energy and free yourself from smoking.
Hypnosis
Hypnosis, changes the way in which you perceive things, but unlike other therapies, hypnosis is not for everyone nor does it work on everyone. Hypnosis for giving up smoking creates suggestion that the cigarette is not a nice taste. For people who are suggestible, hypnosis can be very effective in helping change lifestyle and environmental habits also.
Herbal Remedies
Herbal Remedies specifically for smoking cessation, work by either eliminating the nicotine from the body or replacing the nicotine with another similar chemical. Often these herbal remedies will contain traces of nicotine also. Lobelia is a common herbal remedy for giving up smoking but it should be issued by a herbal practitioner so that the correct doses and product can be given, according to the addiction.
Homeopathy
Homeopathy can be used in giving up smoking. Use a licensed practitioner to obtain the correct medication and advice on how to use it. Although homeopathy alone is not considered to be largely effective it can work well with nutritional or counselling programs.
Acupuncture
Acupuncture is one of the more popular therapies for giving up smoking. The technique applies pressure to certain points in the body (meridians) either by finger pressure or through needles that trigger brain sensations. Some people are more receptive to acupuncture than others and can withstand pain such as, dental pain, so some smokers may no longer sense the pain of nicotine withdrawal and would benefit from acupuncture. With regular sessions acupuncture proves to be an effective therapy.
Laser Therapy
Laser Therapy uses a cold soft light to stimulate specific energy points of the body relating to the addiction. As this therapy does not use needles it is suitable for those with needle fears. The laser therapy helps to release endorphins or ‘happy hormones’ which help the body cope with withdrawal and cravings that come with giving up smoking.
