BITS OF WISDOM: “Successful dieters might win the Nobelly prize.” From Pun of the Day
July: Enjoy the summer! Choose one thing and make it happen.
Microwave Popcorn: Should You or Shouldn’t You?
Consumer Reports rated Orville Redenbacher’s Light Butter microwave popcorn No. 1. Eat half the bag and it’s just 135 calories, 5.1 gm fat and a mere 28 mg of sodium. If you’re like me and eat the whole bag, it’s still a reasonable 270 calories which isn’t even close to a candy bar or Starbucks Mocha Grande.
Health Risk with Microwaved Popcorn
Factory workers were found to have a lung disease attributed to WebMed says: “No Consumer Risk in Microwaved Popcorn”
Not to miss out on the party, a law firm is calling it Popcorn Lung Disease and guess what. You can sue!
Reduce Cancer Risk: Broccoli, Cauliflower & Cabbage Oh My
A recent study found men who consumed broccoli or cauliflower twice a week or more had a much lower rate of prostate cancer. If you don’t like vegetables, learn to add chopped vegi bits to recipes; such as, add finely chopped carrots to spaghetti sauce. Many cookbooks offer easy ways to sneak in some vegetable goodness, usually as a way to get those picky kids to eat more vegis, but many adults grew up with parents who overcooked vegetables into a horrible mush, so now they hate them.
Give vegis another chance! Cook them al dente, tender but still with a bite; delicious.
Cookbook Scandal! One cookbook author accused another of stealing their recipes because both suggested adding hidden vegetables to recipes for kids. Big deal. Get over it.
One of the authors is Jessica Seinfeld, wife of Jerry Seinfeld. Her Deceptively Delicious: Simple Secrets to Get Your Kids Eating Good Food explains how to hide nutritious vegetables in traditional recipes so children will eat them.
Seinfeld joked about it on the David Letterman show saying, “You stole my mushed-up carrots. You can’t put mushed-up carrots in a casserole. I put mushed-up carrots in a casserole. It’s vegetable plagiarism.” Apparently Missy Chase Lapine was not amused, as her book promoting the hidden vegetable theme, The Sneaky Chef: Simple Strategies for Hiding Healthy Foods in Kids’ Favorite Meals was also just published.
I own a cookbook that’s probably 25-years old that also suggests adding vegis to various things, so this is not a new concept. The furor over the whole thing caused both books to become best sellers. Cheers all around.
Elite Fitness Equipment
Gyrokinesis — strange looking and too expensive for the home but is it worth trying? It sure looks cool! Check it out at Circle Studio in Portland, Oregon and Center Gyrotonic. My trouble is I want the equipment at home since getting to a center and paying hefty fees weekly gets difficult. Next month I’ll post pics of my new Smith Machine; addition to my home gym. I’ve taken over the whole basement.
Not so elite but different nonetheless is the Body Flex Bar. Sounds like a candy bar, but nope, it’s exercise gear. This one is a fiberglass bar so it can bend helping you reach a greater stretch. I’d probably fall and break something.
Exercise Poles: These I love. I couldn’t do squats without my poles. You hold onto it and use it for balance. Sadly it doesn’t appear these are available any longer.

Fun Facts: More people are allergic to cow’s milk than any other food.
Obesity a Disease? Yes Says Big Pharmacy
Pharmaceutical companies are excited to label obesity a “disease” as it paves the road for more drug remedies. The best selling weight loss drugs do little, if anything, for long-term results while carrying significant risks (as do all drugs) and the cost is frankly ridiculous.
Read Weight Loss as a Disease at Nutraceuticals World
This week they’re talking about prescribing statin drugs to kids. Will this ever stop? Simply try Bios Life Complete and get all the fiber you or they need. Try fiber first. Statins should be a last resort.
Supplement News: Bios Life Slim Launched
Unicity finally listened to what I’ve been saying for a long time; fiber is great for reducing cholesterol and stabilizing and helps with weight loss. By virtue of the same qualities that help high cholesterol and diabetics; the various fibers help move food through the intestines, cleaning the path (less blockage equals greater absorption of nutrients).
Fiber slows the rate of blood sugar entering the blood stream; hence, it lessens the blood sugar spikes well known by diabetics. But how does it help with weight loss? You drink it before eating. No, it’s not a replacement for your meal, it’s a supplement. Then after about 15 or 20 minutes when you eat, the fiber has swelled in the gut (causing a sense of fullness), and by slowing the absorption thus decreasing the blood sugar spikes. This helps reduce the sleepiness and tiredness after lunch, plus you’ll feel full sooner.
Everyone needs more fiber, but it’s not so easy to get enough in your food; even if you eat very well. US Guidelines call for 20 to 35 grams of fiber per day. Just how to get 20 grams per day? Healthy U shows one cup of cooked oatmeal has 3 grams; 1 cup of minestrone soup has 5 grams and 1/4 cup of kidney beans has 3 grams. So eat your beans.
An apple has 4 grams (I eat one just about every day) and a cup of strawberries has 4 grams. Sprinkle a tablespoon of ground flaxseed into your food and you’ve got 3 grams more.
If you ate everything listed above you’d still have just 22 grams; only slightly above the lower range. Imagine what you’d need to eat to get 35!
Enter Bios Life Complete and/or Bios Life Slim. Fiber in a glass. Yes you can try others sold at the grocery. Put them side-by-side and decide for yourself. Psyllium seed by itself is not a complete fiber; this is important; you want soluble and insoluble fibers.
Fiber is the best broom for your blood vessels too, which is why it helps lower cholesterol, and if you are diabetic, or pre-diabetic, drinking Bios Life before a meal gives your system a change to slowly digest what you eat, rather than the usual rapid swoosh into the blood stream.
Bios Life Slim is now available online at One More Bite’s Unicity page or directly from Kathryn.
Weight Loss Drugs: The Hope & Hype Continues
OBEcure an Israeli bio-pharmaceutical company is working on a new wei.ght loss drug with bethahistine hydrochloride (BH-HCL). BH-HCL is already sold in the US and Canada by the name SERC as a medication for virtigo and Meniere’s disease.
A side-effect of BH-HCL is loss of appetite which induces unintended weight loss, so they say. I find no mention of that side effect, but they did say, “Serc and other brands of ‘betahistine’ are widely prescribed for Meniere’s Disease in Europe, Canada, Mexico, Australia, and elsewhere around the world, but no brand of betahistine, including Serc, is approved for sale within the U.S.”
The FDA’s stance is that information was withheld from the clinical studies thence Serc’s approval was withdrawn.
Top Reduced Fat Cheese
When is the last time you tried reduced fat cheese? It was terrible a few years back, worse than eating plastic, so a general reluctance to try again is still pretty high, yet brave people do try. A recommended cheese to try is “Cracker Barrell 2% Milk Nat Cheese, Extra Sharp Cheddar White”. Yes, that’s the whole name.

A Fool and His Cash Will Soon be Parted: Latest Bogus News About Obesity & Weight Loss
Don’t you think if there were a product that would cause easy weight loss we’d all know about it? It’s not like the media wouldn’t be all over it in a flash, so why do people believe those ridiculous adverts that suggest you don’t need to do anything differently but you’ll lose weight? Snooze to Lose: Sleep & Weight
Studies show sleep deprived subjects have increased appetites. Is this because they are awake longer hours so their bodies recognize an increased need for nutrients? Being hungry isn’t a crime, but if you turn to snack foods such as chips or sweets you’ll gain weight in a hurry.
Play With Your Food
The Chocolate Calculator. Yes, if it looks like real chocolate. Of course I own one. The Chocolator (TM) is a calculator that looks like a candy bar. Doesn’t work all that well but sweet just the same.
Book Review: Idiot Proof Diet: A Weight Loss Plan for Real Women
This book by India Knight and Neris Thomas is a fun read. Written from the perspective of two women who’ve been there, done that. They finally discover that two heads are better than one and use the buddy system, leaning on each other instead of food.
Their food suggestions are heavy on the protein including the suggestion of four pieces of bacon on your first breakfast. Ditch the bacon, ditto the sausage. Fatty meats aren’t a smart food choice. Once in awhile for a treat is fine, but not a staple. If you want more protein, add protein powder to drinks, eat egg whites (toss in a few yolks too but more whites than yolks). Straight off the bone to your plate, not pressed into a tube of, oh, you don’t even want to know, and made into sausages.
The first few weeks on a low carb approach can cause what appears to be a rapid loss, but it’s not going to last unless you intend to eat that way forever. Why bother? It’s far better to eat sensibly and regularly. I especially object to doing without or eating very little fruit because fruit is high in sugar. That’s ridiculous.
Plant a seed and it grows to bear fruit (containing more seeds). Part of the cycle of life. Someone please explain to me how it makes sense to skip eating something a product of the earth but continuing to eat salted pork products?
Sure, cured meat is just fine, they say. Foods we’ve been told to avoid are suddenly “health foods.” Cheese (high protein), chocolate (anti-oxidants), red wine (bioflavnoids and anti-oxidants), and so forth. The key is moderation and quality. Remember too, chocolate means quality dark chocolate with little or no sugar, not a candy bar.
Red wine means a glass a day with a meal, not a bottle or two every night or a binge every weekend.
Maybe the French Do Know a Thing or Two
They eat lots of great cheese and regularly drink wine but don’t have the high obesity rates you see in the U.S. Perhaps because they don’t have huge refrigerators to store weeks worth of food (rather get what they intend to eat daily at local markets), and they don’t snack all day (rarely snacking).
Calories do count. Low carb plans can go overboard with fat and calories, especially unlimited meat and cheese. Take what makes sense from any diet plan and make it work for you. Generally no matter how you slice it, it’s a lower calorie equation that creates lasting weight loss.
P.S. Don’t forgot to add more activity to the mix. Walk more, bend more, stretch more. It doesn’t have to be a chore.
