Though scientists cannot agree on precisely how hypnosis works within the brain and its altered state, there are certain things that have been observed as patients fall into hypnosis. It is commonly believed that the state of consciousness is altered in hypnosis so that the left side of the brain — that side responsible for analysis, judgment, and synthesis — is shut down, and the right side of the brain — the non-analytical side — is made to be more attentive. The subconscious mind is awake and accessible, while the conscious control of the mind is subdued. As the subconscious part of the mind is rooted much deeper, it is more instinctual than the conscious part, yet presents enormous opportunity for the patient to alter his or her physical and behavioral state.
For example, if a person consciously desired to overcome a fear of heights, they may have tried every conscious effort that they can to try to overcome it, and yet still fail because of the terror that remains on the subconscious part of the mind, preventing success. The desired outcome can only be achieved if the subconscious mind is reprogrammed so that the instinctual beliefs, buried deep-down, are removed or changed.

Hi Alan,
I have had an eating disorder since…since I was able to start eating as a child. As of yesterday, I had extremely low self esteem, in the gutter. I depended on others for approval. Public Speaking Hypnosis
Phobias are common. But, glossophobia (the fear of public speaking) is the most prevalent of all, and is thought to affect as many as three out of every four people in Western societies.
As with most phobias, glossophobia tends to develop in response to past experiences, either due to a single traumatic event or through gradual conditioning / association. The fear is then compounded by both negative emotions attached to memories of the past and anticipation/expectation of future poor performance, failure and/or ridicule. The fear of speaking in public is maintained and further compounded by avoidance of public speaking or fixation on it.
Symptoms vary, but typically include extreme anxiety prior to, or even at the thought of having to, verbally communicate with any group of people. The fight and flight stress response is triggered, increasing heart rate, blood pressure, oxygen intake, perspiration, stiffening the muscles, tightening the throat, and disturbing the thought processes leading to a greater incidence of “ums†and “ahhsâ€, forgetfulness and confusion. The anxiety generated, in extreme cases, can lead to a full-blown panic attack.

Hypnosis for Pain
For me, cramming in college wasn’t about mastering material before an exam. It was about squeezing in my studies before a migraine knocked me flat. When the fuzziness started creeping into my head, I knew it was just a matter of time. Leaning over my chemistry book, I’d race to memorize before the thumping began. Learning chemical reactions was not an option in my darkened bedroom, hammers whacking the inside of my head for days at a time.
What freed me from those hammers was hypnosis, a practice that people have used for medical purposes for more than a century. In the last several decades, researchers have subjected hypnosis to the scrutiny of clinical trials — and it has passed with flying colors. It’s been successfully used to soothe acute and chronic pain stemming from surgery, cancer, kidney stones, back conditions, and invasive medical and dental procedures. Still, many people who might benefit from the technique don’t explore it. For some, hypnosis carries a stigma, perhaps because of the “performer” hypnotists, who make people cluck or moo in front of large audiences.
