Smoking is a habit The first cigarette that a person smokes is an unpleasant experience, however as with riding a bike, it gets easier and soon becomes a habit. Most stop-smoking programs work at increasing the individual’s strength to resist the desire to smoke. They rely on willpower, and as willpower fluctuates like moods and emotions, one day it may be strong, the next day it may be weak. The detrimental effect of smoking on a person’s health is now public knowledge, and for this reason many smokers are now looking for ways to quit. Smokers will tell you that they ‘enjoy smoking’ but in the same breath will probably say that they hate the smell and want to give up anyway. It has been found that people smoke for one of two reasons. Firstly that they are identifying with a peer who smokes and secondly as a replacement for something e.g. eating or affection.
