Hypnosis for Childbirth
Hypnosis for Childbirth: What Is It and Does It Work? by Kerry Tuschhoff, HCHI, CHt, CI
Mention Labor and Delivery to an expectant mom in her last trimester, and chances are good that her heart will begin to race, her mind floods with concern and in some cases, panic. She knows that the day is coming when a force much bigger than herself will take over and her body will govern itself completely. For some women, this is a very fearful event, but for hypno-moms, it is merely a challenge.
These wise women use hypnosis to eliminate pain and fear from the birthing experience. In the past, the word “hypnosis” conjured up images of stage hypnotists re-creating Elvis, or mesmerizing others into embarrassing situations. Now it is common for hypnosis to be used therapeutically in many areas of medicine, dental anesthesia and personal therapy sessions. Even so, there are many misconceptions regarding hypnosis that can dissuade those contemplating this powerful tool. Here are a few FACTS:
- All hypnosis is self-hypnosis; the hypnotherapist is only the guide. A person chooses to enter into a hypnotic state, stay in and come out at will.

Top Tips For Finding A Hypnotherapist
Hypnotherapy is becoming one of the most popular forms of complementary therapy. If you’ve made the decision that hypnotherapy is the right therapy to help you overcome your problem, you’ll need to find a hypnotherapist. But how do you know where to find a hypnotherapist and which hypnotherapist is right for you? Here are some tips to finding the right hypnotherapist for you.
First, ask for a recommendation from someone. We ask people for personal recommendations all the time so hypnotherapy should be no different. A recommendation is often the best way to find a hypnotherapist. Knowing that someone has had a good experience and effective results from a particular hypnotherapist is usually a good indicator. Having this sort of knowledge before your hypnosis session can make you relaxed and confident in your therapist.
If you are unable to get a recommendation use a specialist paper or online directory. These will be able to refer you to a qualified local hypnotherapist.

Meditation vs. Hypnosis
I would never let anyone hypnotize me. No one is going to control me. I am quite content doing my meditation using visualization techniques and positive affirmations to achieve my goals. Those types of statements are what many hypnotists hear during their career. In reality, a person doing positive statements or, for that matter, visualizing a scene or desired outcome, is using a form of self-hypnosis.
The definition of true meditation is the absence of all thought and to just be. If a person is mulling over a problem during meditation, he/she is in reality now contemplating the situation, but is no longer considered to be doing meditation. I know this statement will not sit well with a lot of meditation teachers. I feel qualified to make such a statement since I teach both meditation and self-hypnosis. Both classes are presented differently since the techniques are different for each. What I am addressing is the general principles of how each works in this and future articles, not which is better than the other or that now everyone has to change their advertising. Truth be told, both are an allowing process and in some cases, one word is more palatable than the other and each person will get out of it exactly what he/she wants to put into it – no more, no less.
Hypnosis on the other hand, is to have thought, and effect a desired outcome, i.e. stop smoking, weight reduction, stress management, pain management for dental care or childbirth, etc. If someone is participating in a guided meditation (where they are guided down a path and quite possibly into the woods, beach or even a meadow to look at pretty flowers), the person guiding the meditation is telling everyone to see this, hear that and incorporate as many of our senses as possible to allow everyone present to experience a pleasant and memorable time. Some people may smell the flowers, feel the breeze, even hear various sounds in this internal picture. I ask everyone quite simply –

How do I find a good hypnotherapist?
For almost 50 years now, hypnosis has been a proven and endorsed form of medical treatment in all areas including surgery. But even with the consent of the American Medical Association backing them, many still find hypnosis as a puzzle.
In proven studies, hypnosis has been found to help treat several fears and habits such as smoking, public speaking and sexual performance. Hypnosis has also been proven to help patients deal with pain during surgeries as well as childbirth. Hypnosis has also been known to help with problems that don’t deal with the body or mind, but with the physical perception as well. So with so many different ailments, aches and fears that hypnosis can help with, one of the biggest problems for potential clients is finding a hypnotist they trust.
Larry Volz is a former magician who took up hypnosis 15 years ago. He is the executive director for the American Hypnosis Clinic and has held this position for almost four years now. Volz said that there are several good hypnotists out there and anyone interested in finding one has several credible ways of finding them.
“American Hypnosis Clinic has a great affiliate program where we match people up with a hypnotist,” he said. “I’m on the committee and I personally screen every hypnotist by looking at their years of experience, training, and education. You can find us at www.americanhypnosisclinic.com.”
