Smoking related diseases are among the biggest causes of deaths today. Smoking addiction is killing millions of American people each year.
Smoking is now recognized as a medical condition. This however does not stop people trying to quit smoking without seeking medical help. They will try out everything from nicotine patches to nicotine replacement therapies or even herbal or hypnotic treatments to get rid of the habit. However nearly all of these treatments don’t really work.

Why is Smoking So Addictive?

People wanting to stop smoking have many options when it comes to nicotine replacement therapies like nicotine patches, nicotine gum, and nicotine spray. They also can avoid nicotine altogether by using either of two prescription smoking cessation drugs best known by their brand names, Chantix and Zyban.
Chantix (varenicline) and Zyban (bupropion) are the only two non-nicotine medications approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for smoking cessation; both are available in pill form and only by prescription. Chantix received FDA approval in 2006; Zyban was approved in 1997. These drugs can be effective tools, but users need to be aware of some potentially serious side effects.

GUMC to develop smoking cessation aids based on unconventional nicotine addiction theory
Washington, DC A Georgetown University Medical Center research team has been awarded a grant from the National Institute on Drug Abuse to discover and develop new smoking cessation drugs based on an unconventional theory about nicotine addiction. Kenneth Kellar, PhD, a professor of pharmacology at GUMC is principal investigator of the five year grant totaling $4.6 million.

Each year about 46% of smokers in the US try to quit, with around 10% of them being successful in the short term1,2. The longer-term success rate for stopping smoking without anything to help is only about 5%3. Smoking cessation medicines increase the success rate and reduce the withdrawal feelings including cravings. There are plenty of options to help you quit including: Nicotine replacement (e.g. Habitrol, Nicorette), counselling, Zyban and now Chantix. As Chantix has only been on the market since May 2006, considerably fewer people will have used it than other drugs to quit smoking. So there is less known about it than for other smoking cessation products that have been around for much longer.

Chantix
Chantix is a tablet to help quit smoking. It contains a medicine called varenicline. Chantix was approved by the FDA in May 2006, and in the US is only available on prescription. Chantrix is started one week before quitting.

The poll also found that only 36 percent of current smokers are very interested in quitting.
